As its name suggests, it presents a characteristic angle with respect to the horizontal in order to favor access to the mouth. It has a head and a handle attached to the micromotor.

The contra-angle is mainly used to remove dentin or to polish teeth.

There are three different types of contra-angles:

- Transmitter: they are those that work with a 1: 1 transmission ratio, that is, 1 turn of the motor for 1 turn of the cutter. They are usually identified by a blue ring on the contra-angle itself.

- Multiplier: they work with a multiplication ratio such as 1: 2, 1: 3, 1: 4 or 1: 5. With one turn of the motor they can move the cutter from 2 to 5 times, depending on the type. They are identified by a red ring around the piece.

- Reducer: These rotaries work with a reduction ratio such as 20: 1, 15: 1, etc. They are usually the ones used in implantology, for every 20 turns of the motor, 1 turn of the drill is made. They are identified by a green ring, usually.
