Apex locators (or apical locators) are electronic endodontic instruments that measure the impedance, frequency, and resistance of the surrounding material to determine the working length within the root canal.

An apex locator consists of a monitor connected with a cable, a labial hook and a clip that, connected to the endodontic element (files), closes the electrical circuit.
